FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Philcon?
Philcon is Philadelphia's annual science fiction conference. It is hosted by the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society.

How old do you have to be to attend Philcon?
Philcon is open to people of all ages. Younger fans in particular should consider the Children's Program, designed for ages 7-12, although the activities (crafts, games, discussions and LEGO bricks) are engaging for all, and we encourage families to enjoy them together. Most activities transpire in a single room, but other family-friendly events are scattered throughout the convention. Please check the pocket program. (Note: the Children's Program is not babysitting; children under 7 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian while in the room.)
Please check our registration form for the admission fees for children (ages 7-12, student/youth ages 13-17). No child under age 16 will be admitted to the convention unless accompanied by their parent or adult guardian, who must sign a waiver of the conference’s responsibility.

Is there babysitting at Philcon?
Philcon does not offer babysitting services.

Can I just attend for one day?
Yes, Philcon has rates for day memberships which can be converted into full weekend memberships. Day-memberships are available at the con and will be announced as soon as they are available.

Can I bring my pet?
Unfortunately, our hotel has a no pet policy. The hotel only allows service animals. Service animals are welcome at all Philcon events including room parties.

What is filk?
Filk is science fiction or fantasy themed folk music. You're welcome to listen or join in the singing.

Do I need to wear a costume to attend Philcon?
Absolutely not! Most people who attend wear their regular clothes, although some people use Philcon to express their style they might otherwise be unable to in their regular life such as wearing T-shirts with SF themes. A percentage of people wear what are called hall costumes, but dressing up is by no means a requirement to attend Philcon or enjoy Philcon.

Why doesn't Philcon have media guests?
Philcon is primarily a literary convention which embraces many aspects of SF/Fantasy genres. We have many guests from the literary, art, science, costuming, anime and gaming world.

Why is Philcon in New Jersey?
In order to provide multiple tracks of programming as well as all the other exciting events happening this weekend we needed a hotel that was able to provide us the function space needed to host such a large event. The Crowne Plaza has hosted many SF conferences in the past, including Costume Con and they were very welcoming to our group.

What do I need to know about running a party at Philcon?
Please contact parties2009@philcon.org to ask any questions you have about hosting a party.
